Kael is the fractured soul of Kajin, one of the five mythic Akili warriors from the ancient kingdom of Ukan — and the only one of them by blood. The Akili were chosen by the Grand Resonant through Nu’at resonance, sworn but not biologically descended; Kajin was the Grand Resonant’s actual son, the only blood Akili. Once the most powerful swordsman of his age, Kajin was betrayed and lost to the Timeless Rift during the Zakai’s temporal invasion. After centuries of torture, his body survived but his memory did not. Reborn as Kael, he was discovered by Dr. Araya in the Ukanian Desert. He remembers only instinct and carries his dual-head scythe (Barca’s Edge) glowing with pure Maine energy—later revealed to be bound to the spirit of Eira, his lost love and Akili comrade. His DNA tests as ~66 million years old, but his apparent age sits in the 30s–40s; the Rift sits outside time entirely, and he was preserved in stasis while his mind endured what felt like centuries of torment. He joins the Red Sanctum and becomes a silent protector in the Rebellion Wars, eventually becoming Shad’s guardian and mentor in The Trenches.
