🎯 Thelma Freedmen — “Dead Odds”

Thelma Freedmen is a former UCC sniper and the former #1 marksman in the United Civilizations Coalition. After the collapse of the UCC and the rise of VANTH, she abandoned military service and relocated to The Trenches, where she spends her days drinking, gambling, and outrunning the memories of a life she can never truly leave behind. Despite the self-destructive lifestyle, she remains one of the most dangerous precision fighters alive.

Most people see a loud, funny, irresponsible drunk. Few realize she is one of the deadliest marksmen in human history.

🧬 Appearance

  • Older Black woman, appears in her 60s
  • Frizzy wavy bob — just below the ears, above the shoulders — black hair with visible gray strands
  • Round glasses, large warm smile
  • White-and-red UCC military bomber overcoat worn open, with a worn UCC insignia
  • Black tactical clothing underneath, black leather gloves, military boots

🧠 Personality

Loud, playful, social, and highly charismatic. She enjoys gambling, drinking, making bets, talking trash, and time with the bar regulars. Most assume she takes nothing seriously — they are wrong.

Thelma hides profound grief behind humor. She presents herself as unserious precisely because she does not want anyone to see how much of the old war still lives inside her. She laughs easily. She forgives slowly. She forgets nothing.

💥 Combat

Primary Weapon — Maine Darts

Specialized Maine Energy darts that glow gold when charged and use Maine amplification, organized into power tiers for different situations. Thelma prefers darts because they force deliberate decision-making — she believes violence should be precise, controlled, and proportional.

Combat Philosophy

“Speed creates damage. Placement decides death.”

As a former sniper she grew disillusioned with firearms — over time, bullets felt inevitable, the outcome decided before the trigger was pulled. Darts restored uncertainty; they forced her to think, adapt, and choose. She views lethality as the failure of systems rather than the product of raw force.

Dead Odds

Dead Odds is not an attack — it is a mental state. When Thelma enters it, the humor disappears, the gambling stops, emotional distractions vanish, and her precision reaches its absolute peak. It occurs when uncertainty no longer has value and an outcome must be guaranteed. Most people never see this side of her. Those who do rarely forget it.

Secondary Weapon — RED SWAN

Her former UCC sniper rifle: red scope, red swan insignia on the muzzle, immaculately maintained, always carried on her back.

RED SWAN is the single most important object in Thelma’s life — it carries her victories, failures, regrets, friendships, lost love, and the memory of the UCC. It represents a version of herself she no longer wants to become; she keeps it because she cannot let go, and avoids using it whenever possible. If RED SWAN is drawn, the situation has become extremely serious.

🕰️ History

UCC Service — The premier marksman of the United Civilizations Coalition, legendary for accuracy and battlefield reliability. For years, she represented certainty itself.

UCC Collapse — After the fall of the UCC and the rise of VANTH, she abandoned military life and disappeared into the Trenches rather than join a new command. Her stated goal: “Drink, gamble, and live out whatever time I have left.”

🔗 Relationships

  • Rhea (niece) — Thelma’s last known family, and Rhea’s. Thelma never took custody, believing herself too unreliable and too damaged to be a proper guardian; the decision created lasting distance. Rhea has little respect for Thelma’s current lifestyle; Thelma believes Rhea understands neither war nor its consequences.
  • David O’Neal — Rhea’s father. Thelma blames him for the death of her sister and, ultimately, for leaving Rhea orphaned. The resentment remains unresolved.
  • James Okoro — Former romantic partner. Thelma deeply respects James; their relationship ended badly, and she privately believes the failure was her own fault — one of her lasting regrets.

🏙️ Reputation in the Trenches

Known as a legendary gambler, a heavy drinker, a former war hero, and a living relic of the UCC. Many younger residents know her only as an eccentric old woman; veterans know better.

“If Thelma’s taking bets, you’re safe. If Thelma stops taking bets, run.”

🎭 Core Theme

A woman trapped between certainty and uncertainty. Darts represent choice. Gambling represents possibility. RED SWAN represents inevitability. Her story is about learning whether a person can survive their past without becoming it again.
